AI for better user experience on web and intranet

Artificial intelligence can help businesses offer better websites and intranets. That's why we asked Johan Albertsson of rek.ai to tell us more about what can be achieved with AI technology.

AI can mean so many things, depending on who you talk to and what perspective you have. Personally, I see AI as another technology that helps us humans solve problems and improve our everyday lives and world. The beauty of AI is that it will constantly improve as time goes on.

I've been working in the web and as a Sitevision consultant for over 11 years, and in 2017, my colleague Thomas Papatziamos and I started rek.ai External link.. Our service is AI-based and helps users personalise their website or intranet.

UX that adapts automatically

The use cases for web and intranet are vast, but I want to focus on helping users find what they are looking for and complete what they came to do. This could be seeing the task they are looking for directly, getting support to follow a flow or getting automatic suggestions for pages based on the other pages they have looked at.

A UX that automatically adapts to the visitor's conditions makes the experience as accommodating as possible. Working with AI in this way results in reduced support costs, which is the most obvious value we see. It also reduces the time that editors need to spend on analysis. They can instead focus on producing content while AI is responsible for analysis and prioritisation. In the long run, AI can also lead to greater sales and upselling.

With AI, municipalities can save money that they can spend on other activities, while for marketing companies it is more a way to avoid being overtaken by competitors. There is an incredible amount of optimisation that can be done with the help of AI, such as shortened lead times and parts of a process, saved money in both development and management and not least conversion optimisation.

From a business perspective, I see that organisations are ready for AI and see the benefits of the technology. However, there may be a lack of knowledge about how to run an AI project. What is the cost, how long does it take, how much preparation is required and how should it be managed? That's why we developed rek.ai as an ordinary plugin, without the need to change the underlying system.

Recommended content for each user

Rek.ai takes into account over 100 factors that allow the system to recommend content, keyword suggestions, news and documents to the current visitor. Each page view is stored in our servers along with all anonymous data in compliance with GDPR. This allows us to build an AI model every night that we then ask questions to. The model can then provide a suggestion of information to the current visitor, so that each visitor gets a customised experience. As the solution is a plugin, it requires no time or development from administrators or editors, and it can be up and running in 24 hours.

It's important that the web visitor can complete their business, find the right information, search for their building permit, discover new events and avoid calling customer service. On an intranet, people should be able to find what they are looking for more quickly. At the time of writing, we have five municipalities using our service: Järfälla, Falkenberg, Upplands-Bro, Götene and Halmstad. We also have Postkodlotteriet External link. as customers, and Sitevision uses rek.ai on its help website to recommend articles.

We're only at square one when it comes to AI and user experience. So we're really excited to see how customers and developers will use our product to build websites we can't imagine today. On Netflix, 75% of what users stream is recommended by an AI engine. This is not the case on most websites, so we want to help raise that figure so that more of what is used on a website is AI-recommended.

3 tips to get started with AI

  1. Take advantage of the knowledge that exists. Watch talks on Youtube, Ted talks and listen to podcasts.
  2. Use your network. Post a question on LinkedIn and try to find other organisations in the same situation to share experiences.
  3. Get help from someone who knows. Want to fix a process you're not happy with? Hire a consulting company that can solve it. Do you find that an AI project and management is too much for your organisation to take on? Look at a ready-made solution.
