Digital employee experience – what is it?
The concept of digital employee experience (DEX) is starting to take off in the Swedish market. IT consultants, product houses and strategists are discovering the possibilities of DEX – but what is it really about?
The answer to what it is may vary depending on who you ask – but let me try to put my finger on what it is.
Pandemic and the digital workplace
In 2016, the concept of the 'digital workplace' was a hot topic and many organisations were quick to follow suit. Then came the pandemic and the digital workplace really took hold. The focus then shifted to creating the conditions for everyone in the team to be productive. With the focus so clearly on productivity, digital stress, reduced wellbeing in the home office, and friction in digital collaboration followed like a letter in the mail (or yes, an email in the inbox).
Digital employee experience – the employee's perspective
Digital employee experience is about the individual's perspective in the modern organisation. How can they balance productivity and well-being in their daily lives?
One thing is certain: Hybrid working is the new normal. Research firm Forrester reports (in The Anywhere-Work Guide For Tech Pros 2022) that 66% of business leaders are planning for a hybrid or fully remote workplace. This means that employees will have to rely on technology and collaboration models that in turn need to be linked to the company's culture and overall goals – and this is where digital employee experience becomes essential to success.
Digital employee experience is about how the employee travels between information and different digital tools during their working day. The concept is not a tool or a strategy, but rather a view from the employee's perspective on how your organisation's digital ecosystem works. And how it affects them in their daily work.
