Women in tech

Many people agree that an equal and inclusive workplace is a desirable and beneficial thing. But how can we become more equal – and why is it really important? Sandra Lindqvist was named Sitevision's Most Valuable Professional in 2022, and now she's visiting the blog with a post about women in tech.

The tech industry will face a challenge next year – there will be a shortage of 70 000 people in the IT industry in Sweden alone by 2024 External link, opens in new window.. Increasing the number of women in the industry is an important part of meeting this challenge. Including more women broadens the recruitment base and allows companies to meet demand. At the same time, companies can benefit from their different perspectives and experience to solve problems and move the industry forward.

What does increasing the number of women in tech mean?

Increasing the number of women in tech can also help reduce gender stereotypes and increase gender equality in the sector. It can help create a more inclusive work environment for everyone, regardless of gender or background, which has been shown to increase team performance External link, opens in new window.. However, increasing the number of women in the tech sector is not about reducing the number of men, it is about creating an industry where everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to their full potential and about creating a fairer and more equal industry for all.

But actively working to increase gender equality in tech is no easy task. There are several barriers that can make it harder for women to enter and pursue a career in tech. To overcome them, we need to work together as a society and industry to create a more inclusive and fair environment. For example, by increasing access to mentoring programs for women, fighting discrimination and inequality in the workplace, and creating more role models and positive examples for women in the industry.

We can also work to create a culture where it is more acceptable and encouraging for women to take an interest in technology and data. By making the tech industry more accessible and inclusive, we can create a future where everyone can contribute to technology development on equal terms.

Sitevision – a door opener

I believe that there is a threshold for young women to dare to take a step into the industry and try to work in tech because of a fear of the field of technology, which may be mainly based on experience and ignorance. But what if that threshold could be lowered with a tool that is easy to get into and understand, even for those with less experience in programming – a tool like Sitevision. Sitevision as a tool can open doors for, for example, recent graduates and people from related industries and roles to dare to work in tech. In fact, that's how I got into the industry myself, as a web developer in Sitevision when I was still a student.

But Sitevision is not only a gateway to the industry, it also provides great opportunities to continue to develop. You can dive into new technologies, build advanced solutions and develop cool features. Sitevision may be a door opener, but it's also a reason to stay!

How gender equality at HiQ makes us better

In the Sitevision team at HiQ we are many women, in fact we are more than 60 percent. Which is great! I believe that gender equality in our team is one of many success factors behind our successful projects.

With our different personalities and experiences, we tackle the challenges we face, and together we come up with unexpected solutions.

In my opinion, a lot has happened in tech just since I started working about seven years ago. Today, there are many more women in the industry to be inspired by. There are now more women leading the way, taking their place and inspiring others to do the same. It's a good step towards getting women into all kinds of IT roles. Everything from programmers and system architects to project managers and designers or other expertise. I think it's also a must in order to reach the 70,000 people who will be missing next year. We are making a difference and have taken a good first step, now it's time for the next one.

What is the distribution where you work? Are you also ready to take a step forward? If you would like to discuss further or hear more about how we work at HiQ, please get in touch. Hope to hear from you in the future!

Many thanks to my colleague Maria for her help with this post.
