AI in the public sector – from vision to reality

It wasn't long ago that we were talking about artificial intelligence as something that belonged to the future, today more and more people are using AI in their daily work. And the public sector is no exception. Perhaps that's where the potential is greatest, in organisations where time is short, needs are great and resources are limited. But how do you go from future talk to real results? Here we highlight what is important to consider and good examples of how to use it.

AI is not magic – it's courage, method and people

It's easy to get caught up in the possibilities of technology – but AI requires more than just smart code. To create real value in the public sector, we also need to build trust and clarity.

Here are some important things to keep in mind:

Trust and transparency

To build trust, it must be clear that AI is being used – especially if it is used in contact with citizens.

Ethics and fairness

AI must not reinforce bias or discrimination. Tools must be vetted, tested and built with care.

Data quality and security

AI depends on good data. Here, the public sector needs to both nurture its information and use it responsibly.

Focus on people

AI should not replace people, it should make their work more efficient. It's about freeing up time and energy for things that require human intervention.

AI in practice – it's already happening here

Many municipalities and regions are already doing it – with small, smart steps that have a big impact. Here are some examples of how AI is being used in the public sector.

götene KOMMUNE

AI assistant improves user experience

Götene Municipality has implemented the AI assistant Göta on its website to improve user experience and streamline internal prioritisation of content. Göta provides personalised recommendations through features such as quick links, keyword suggestions, questions and answers, and related news. By adapting content to the visitor's behaviour and context, the municipality has reduced the time it takes to find the right information. This gives editors more time to focus on quality content work.

Municipality of Sundsvall

The creation of a municipal AI

The municipality of Sundsvall has created AI assistants, analysis tools and knowledge bases built on the municipality's own data. The goal is for all employees to benefit from AI in a safe, open and transparent way. Going forward, Sundsvall plans to use insights and data from its Sitevision web to further improve and customise its AI applications.

Region Värmland

Analysis of mammography images

Region Värmland was the first in the country to use AI to review mammography images. AI helps to make an initial analysis of the images. The results are then double-checked by breast radiologists. This has made the work both faster and easier, giving radiologists more time for what really matters – taking care of patients.

Trelleborg MUNICIPALITY

Automation of case management

The municipality of Trelleborg is streamlining the processing of financial assistance with the help of process automation. By automating parts of the processing, the administrative load is reduced, which frees up time to focus on more complex cases. Applications are automatically sorted and prioritised. This results in faster decisions and a more efficient social service.

What do all these examples have in common? AI is not being used to 'take over', but to support and create space for what matters most. AI in the public sector is not primarily about technology – it's about change. An opportunity to do more with less, to work smarter and to create services that are truly based on people's needs.

People in town with little Ai thought bubbles above them.
