Ready when it counts – how Kronofogden secures its website
If the regular website goes down, the backup website steps up. The Swedish Enforcement Authority has prepared for the unexpected – with a solution that is as reliable as it is stripped down. To be able to inform, guide and provide security, even in stressful situations.
Background and Challenge
As a public authority, the Swedish Enforcement Authority has a great responsibility – even when the unexpected happens. That's why the agency chose to develop a backup website as part of its business continuity plan. The backup website is activated if the regular website is down, for example in the event of a cyberattack or other major disruption.
– Our website has been down on three occasions since I started in 2017, says Tina Engvall, communications manager for kronofogden.se. Previously, we had a simple Apache page, but because the content was general and static, we could not communicate what the disruption was due to or provide guidance to our visitors.
The pandemic triggered a more structured approach to crisis preparedness, and the need for a better backup web solution became clear. A page that loads quickly, is accessible and allows for real-time communication – if needed.
" Having the back-up website in place is a comfort. We can easily keep visitors in particular, but also colleagues, updated on what's happening in a pressured situation."
Tina Engvall, Communications Officer at Kronofogden
Solution
The reserve web is built in Sitevision Cloud, in accordance with the Swedish Enforcement Authority's requirements for security, cloud services and availability. It is stripped down, clear and fast – just as it needs to be.
– We have removed everything that is not needed. No images, no icons, just information. It should be easy to do the right thing, even in a stressful situation, explains Tina Engvall.
The content structure is prepared and ready to go. The reserve web consists of:
- Home page – with clear information about what has happened.
- News – keeping the visitor up to date.
- E-services and login – short descriptions and links in one place.
- English version – so international visitors can find their way around.
- Frequently asked questions and answers – to save time and patience.
- Contact page – so help is never more than a click away.
- Information banner – for the most important information, so no one misses anything.
According to the process Kronofogden has set up, they call up the page when needed, and there are both manuals and procedures in place to be able to act quickly.
The result
The Swedish Enforcement Authority hopes, of course, that the reserve web will never need to be used. But knowing that it exists and that it works creates security.
– Since the regular website has been down before, it feels really good to have the backup website in place, says Tina.
